I hear you, Brian. DePaul's on quarters, so I'm still very much in the thick of things. Still, when summer comes, that balance of keeping up the momentum and taking care of Everything Else will inspire me and not shut me down, heh. My queue of fic and non-fic books (and AWP acquired lit mags) will be more than enough to get me to the fall.... Happy summer reading!

Eliza, I don't think you are a bad student. Of course each writer has their own unique approach to generating ideas and getting finished product to market. I think Marion's point is that if time is limited (which we know it often is), it is better to sit down and write with focused intent to put together a 750-word essay that can contribute to a larger work, versus writing about ice cream or blueberries. As long as the approach you use works for you and helps you get to finished literary work - I say, "Go for it!" :)

I do two writing prompt exercises a week - am I a bad student?! :P I think every writer is free to do what he/she wants to, so if a prompt is a good way to get started, then I think that's the way to go. But it's good to hear the opinion of a published memoir-writer. Thanks for sharing!
